Universal Edibility Test

Before consuming any wild plant life, Wildology suggests you take the time refer to more sources to confidently determine the plant species and perform the universal edibility test before consuming.

1. Smell it. Toxic plants often have a foul odor. If no unpleasant smell...

2. Hold a piece of the plant in bend of your elbow and for 5-10 minutes. If your skin seems irritated or itchy, do not eat it. If there is no contact reaction, prepare a small portion the way you plan to eat it...

3. Touch the prepared portion to your lips to test for burning or itching. If there’s no reaction after 15 minutes...

4. Take a small bite, chew it, and hold it in your mouth for 15 minutes. If it tastes very bitter or soapy, spit it out. If there’s no reaction in your mouth...

5. Swallow the bite and wait several hours. If there’s no ill effect, this part of the plant is most likely edible.

6. Repeat the test for other parts of the plant as some plants have both edible and toxic parts.
